Soul Tending: Spiritual Direction

A practice of contemplatively oriented one-on-one Spiritual Direction.

What is Spiritual Direction?

In a world that is chaotic, a life that is busy to the point of distraction, and a culture that values hurrying — doing more than being — it can be hard to find your footing and come to a quiet enough moment to think clearly and listen deeply. Spiritual Direction, a practice with ancient roots in many traditions, involves seeking the companionship and support of a guide who helps you to listen with an open heart to the deeper wisdom of God (whether your understanding of God is well spelled-out or more nebulous).

In my practice of one-on-one Spiritual Direction, I work with people from across the religious and spiritual spectrum, helping them to hear the guidance of their deeper wisdom, regardless of the name they use for the Source of that wisdom.

About Susie

I am an ordained United Church of Christ minister who has served in the parish setting as a solo pastor, and in the hospice world as an interfaith spiritual counselor (aka chaplain). My formal studies have taken me from Smith College (BA) to Union Theological Seminary (MDiv), to The Shalem Institute for Spiritual Formation (certificate in their Spiritual Guidance Program). Over the years, I have been fortunate to experience a number of retreats under the guidance of Jesuits, including a 30-day experience of Ignatius’s Spiritual Exercises, and their mode of spiritual inquiry and discernment has shaped me a great deal.

Those are the bare-bones facts. The bigger picture is that I am a spiritual seeker in my own life, and am always moved by the opportunity to serve as a companion in the journeys of others. I seek to follow the way of Jesus, but I find deep wisdom in other traditions, too. In terms of spiritual type, I am a contemplative, and I lean into silence for spiritual nourishment.

I am skillful at meeting people where they are in a way that is nonjudgmental, caring, and curious. I am a noticer of beauty, a steadfast truth-speaker, and an appreciator of wit, poetry, music, and kindness.
